Invisible Children - Mission - The Team

How has the situation in Uganda changed since the documentary was released?
Since the documentary was released in 2005, much has changed in Uganda. Night commuting has ceased and the Lord’s Resistance Army has been operating outside of northern Uganda for over a year. However, displacement and the looming threat of a return to war has hindered any major progress towards normalcy in the north and has deepened the high levels of poverty throughout northern Uganda.

Can I volunteer with Invisible Children in Uganda?

While we appreciate and understand your eagerness to serve overseas, Invisible Children does not have a volunteer program abroad. As we’ve developed as an organization, we’ve seen how a large influx of people without a specific purpose can be detrimental to a small community. As a result, the programs we have developed on the ground focus on Ugandans helping Ugandans.

If I'm already going to be in Uganda, can I volunteer?

If you are already going to be in Uganda you are more than welcome to make an appointment to visit our office and hear about our programs on the ground. However, we will not be able to facilitate you as a volunteer.

Can you recommend other organizations that will allow me to work in Uganda short-term?

There are many organizations that offer short-term trips to all areas of Uganda. At this point there are no organizations Invisible Children directly partners with. We suggest you seek out these organizations personally to establish your own connection.

Can I donate my old clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. for you to send the children in Uganda?

Instead Invisible Children seeks to address the causes of these symptoms by creating jobs and providing education to empower Ugandans to provide for their own families, rather than rely on handouts for support. Books may be donated to Invisible Children through Better World Books to raise funds that will provide textbooks for schools in northern Uganda.

Is Invisible Children currently hiring?

For current information about Invisible Children’s HR needs, check the Jobs section of the website. Regardless, we encourage you to send us an application and a resume which we will keep on file for future reference. Please indicate the general area you are applying for: Communication, Art and Film, Movement (i.e. World Tour), Corporate (i.e. accounting and development), Public Relations, or positions in Uganda

Do I need permission to show Invisible Children: Rough Cut?

We at IC make every effort to spread the word about the plight of those in northern Uganda, and we realize that having access to “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” is vital to helping this movement grow. As we pass the torch to you, we ask you use the documentary and Invisible Children logo responsibly—only to raise awareness and benefit Invisible Children, Inc.

Is Invisible Children, Inc. a 501C3 charity?

Invisible Children is a 501(c)3 public charity, as determined by the IRS, and we are independently audited on an annual basis. Our tax ID number is 54-2164338. All donations made to Invisible Children are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. A donation received through the mail or online will be followed up shortly with a thank you and tax receipt for your records.

Where does money donated to Invisible Children, Inc. go?
Invisible Children has taken a unique approach to the situation in northern Uganda. As the longest running war in Africa, our primary goal is a peaceful solution to the end of this conflict. Consequently, 50% of our programming budget is utilized in bringing awareness to the situation and promoting international support of the peace process taking place. At the same time, there is a dire need for relief in northern Uganda, especially when it comes to the region’s youth. The remaining 50% of our budget provides top-notch programming for affected children and their families.

Our focus on the ground is developing a new generation of leaders in northern Uganda, and this is accomplished through the provision of educational scholarships, mentorship, and the rebuilding of secondary academic institutions. Our hope is that, by focusing partially on immediate relief in northern Uganda as well as long-term change in the region, we can have the most positive effect with the resources provided.

When it comes to accountability, we have the highest standards, and our media and websites excel in informing donors as to the impact of their support. Our financial reports are available on the website under the “Financials” section (http://www.invisiblechildren.com/About/annual_reports).

For donors looking for an opportunity to give directly to programming in northern Uganda, the Schools for Schools program pledges at least 90% of donations will be used in the rebuilding of our partner schools, with less than 10% reserved to implement these funds.

Whether you are interested in having your donation support both the effort to raise awareness and provide relief in northern Uganda, or you simply want to support educational programming in the region, we appreciate your consideration of donating to Invisible Children.

What is Invisible Children's political stance?

Invisible Children, Inc. is nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that is committed to exposing atrocities around the world and developing the necessary solutions to ending conflicts that plague the lives of disadvantaged people. As world leaders are failing to make the necessary commitment to end the crisis in northern Uganda, Invisible Children is dedicated to revealing the truth to a generation of young people, who can, in turn, advocate for changed policies and action from their government. Invisible Children believes that changing perceptions in the western world is equally important to changing the lives of people in underprivileged regions.

Is Invisible Children affiliated with any religious organization(s)?

Invisible Children is not a religious organization, meaning we are not affiliated with a certain church or ministry. We feel that our role in the community is best spent on education and development programs.  While we do not focus on proselytizing, we allow all of our employees and beneficiaries to practice their personal beliefs.

How can I get involved?

From day one, the overwhelming response to the documentary has been, “What can I do?” To answer this question, the filmmakers formed the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. Since its inception in 2005, Invisible Children has been working tirelessly to improve the quality of life for northern Ugandans through the mediums of education, health care, and employment.

The best thing you can do to help is start by telling others and showing the movie. Use your sphere of influence to create lasting change. Raising awareness is key, and the documentary is currently the best medium to shed light on the situation in Northern Uganda. By simply passing it on and educating others, you are making a difference. Visit the Movement section of the website to learn more about how you can become a part of the story. If you are a student, be sure to check out our Schools for Schools program, and bring the revolution to your school.

I don't live in the U.S. Can I still help?
We are truly amazed and humbled that the Invisible Children documentary has traveled across the globe and is now in your hands. It’s exciting to know the movement has spread so far and is now gaining much needed international interest. At this time, we are currently working on expanding internationally. We've accomplished quite a bit in the United States, but we want to include other countries in our efforts. We realize that we need all the help we can get; there is so much to do in Uganda and surrounding areas- and we cannot do it alone. While the filmmakers are Americans, this is not an American story. It is the responsibility of the global community to fight social injustice.

To book a screening in your neck of the international woods, click here. For our European pals, check out the new IC Europe Tour page. And stay in touch! Continue to email us and keep the dialogue going. We love to know how people are responding to Invisible Children in your area, and we will keep your information on record for our upcoming international tours.

How much can I charge to show the film?
We want everyone to have FREE access to “Invisible Children: Rough Cut.” Be creative and make your screening unique. The only thing we insist is that you don’t charge for admission.

Can the filmmakers come to my screening?

Please contact the office if you’re holding a major screening and would like a filmmaker to attend. Their schedules are very demanding but if time allows, you will need to provide transportation and a place for them to lay their heads. If the filmmakers are unavailable, many credible staff members who have been with Invisible Children from the beginning will be glad to come in their place. We truly love to attend your events and support your efforts.
