I had this amazing idea to kidnap students during a "normal" school day and make them watch the video
The movie disturbed me, in a good way. It bothered me so much I knew I had to pass the word on...and show the film to the "go getters" in my school.
Inspiration
No, I can't help everyone...but I can try.
Telling others about the problem doesn't fix it. The answer is in the actions.
After watching Invisible Children in my Applied Philosophy class, my pinwheels started turning. I had this amazing idea to kidnap students during a "normal" school day and make them watch the video. I mentioned my idea to a classmate, a fellow club officer. After talking to our advisor the same day we saw the movie, we set the wheels in motion. We originally wanted to pull one student out of every class in the school, but the principles said we needed teacher permission and volunteers And the students couldn't miss any valuable class time since it's the end of the year. So, we scheduled our mock abduction on a "Meeting Day" (free day for students that don't have to go to club/organization meetings).
With only three days to get volunteers and teacher permission, we were nervous. In the end it worked out extremely well though. We (myself and two classmates) dressed in all black and marked ourselves "LRA". We went to the classrooms and called out the person's name. Without an explanation, we made them walk in silence to the designated room. After we abducted all 14, we broke character and started the movie. They sat on the floor for the first half, and since we are "nice abductors" we gave them a bathroom break and a snack. The second half of the film was watched from desks, and a discussion followed. The students were given paper and a marker to write out their thoughts. The reflection time spent before the film, at break time, and after the film filled up the papers.
I am happy to say that our abduction moved the younger students to do something to help. I hope you will see the response from these students soon!
