Guess who's back...from Sudan...guess who's back, guess who's back (trip #1)

We are back from the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, and let us tell you, it was difficult. Following are some of the highlights: First off, Have you ever experienced 140 degree weather without any hope of escape? We thought this type of heat was exaggeration, until we stepped off the plane and into the relentless blaze that gave us some idea as to what hell might feel like. We have pictures next to the thermostat and it\'s no joke. Imagine being in a conventional house oven, basted in 'Icy-Hot", with a flame thrower glazing your skin. This might give you some idea of how hot it has been for the past 10 days. You should Thank God everyday that you live in a time and place that has such novel inventions as the air-conditioner, ice, Dairy Queen, and Right Guard. -Upon arriving I, Jason, experienced major loose stools (think: liquid guacamole underwear), and blew chunks (threw up) violently thrice times. We got it on video. After 4 days I saw a local doctor who gave me a shot in the rear, some pills, I felt better after that. But until then i thought i had tape-worm and was going to die. I\'m a theater kid. I\'m dramatic. -None of us had ever been in such a desolate place. Think Mexican hole in the wall (again without the refried beans or any food for that matter). We would sleep outside under the stars and beaming moon, we had a lot of time to think. To be in a place with no distractions and no escape, kinda like prison, it really puts your life in perspective (Think: The Shining or Misery). You start to realize how much you expect water to be readily available. There was literally nothing where we went. These people have nothing and do nothing all day. And when i write \"nothing\" i mean they might stand up, light a blunt, and sit down again - oh yes, weed is readily available @ the bargain price of 2,000 shillings a bag, which is equivelant to fifty U.S. pennies. But beyond that, nothing. They have no education, no concept of the outside world, and yes they still think the world is flat. The crazy thing is: If they did know that the world was round, it wouldn\'t really change how they live. If you think of \"Encino Man\" plus \"The Flintstones\" minus the technological breakthrough, otherwise known as \"The Wheel\", plus \"Half Baked\" you will get a clearer picture as to how these people live, and have been living for thousands of years. We concluded, it must be too hot to even think of making a wheel. -The most exciting moment is when we butchered a Six-Foot Spawn of Satan, who was a direct descendent from the serpent in the infamous Garden of Eden. Armed with an axe, Kerosene fluid, a camera, and the courage of a four-year-old school girl, we made quick work of the snake. We will have a separate screening of our 15-minute short film entitled, \"Three Catholic school girls and The axing of an eight-foot Anaconda.\" Double up on the panties, cause your gonna laugh one of them off. -We also tried a swig of the famous local brew, it\'s called \"Merisa.\" Although we\'ve never tasted our own urine mixed with dirt; we imagine that it tastes something like this local brew. One word: nasty. -We are now in route back to Northern Uganda, After much deliberation and discussion we feel our hearts calling us back to these kids that sleep on the streets. These are the kids who get taken by the Rebel Army (the Lord\'s Resistance Army that we told you about in the last e-mail). As much as we\'ve poured our story in Southern Sudan, we feel that the most effective documentary will be one that is narrower in scope. We have about 3 and a half weeks left. and we want to make sure we leave with a solid story to tell. We know God is with us and continues to hook us up and provide us with some incredible stories. We wish you could all see, hear, touch and taste (okay, you don\'t want to taste anything in Africa, but 3 out of 4 ain\'t bad) what we are experiencing daily. We miss you. We miss In-N-Out. If you have any news or encouraging words, please continue to e-mail we would love to hear from you all. Happy Easter - He has risen indeed. Jason, Bobby and Laren |
