White Flags in Gulu
September 12th, 2006

What would it look like if white flags dotted Gulu, with more white in the horizon than thatched huts?

Well, we don’t want to ruin the climactic ending of the feature-length film, but it’s happened like a crescendo of violins ringing in our ears. We know that the peace talks aren’t over yet, but we feel like a newfound hope is seeping into this war-ravaged region.

Last week, we waved thousands of white flags with the Acholi people during a historic parade in Gulu. We marched from the Gulu District Council to the gates of the barracks of the fourth army division to hand over white flags to the commander of the ground forces. The Gulu chairman, Nobert Mao, approached us a few days before with his idea of a white flag parade, asking if we could buy the flags for it. In a heartbeat we found any and all white fabric to make into flags – never before have we been so excited to make history alongside the Acholi people. We witnessed children tying flags on the barrels of guns, walking boldly through the streets, holding their head high with an overwhelming desire to tell the world that the current peace talks aren’t to be taken lightly.

Gulu is filled with hope, and the world is listening.

Jason, Bobby, and Laren are still in Uganda, feeling the heat of the history books being written over these last couple of months. They’ve been filming for upcoming programs (including awesome pictures and videos that show how what you’ve done here is hitting the ground in Uganda in huge ways). They’ve also been catching up with Emmy and Rosalyn, our next two featured bracelets, and capturing more of that Gulu lifestyle that we wish you all could experience.

And stateside, we’re feeling waves of hope coming across the Atlantic with the glow of dawn. The new roadies are slowly coming in like our own version of a white flag parade, with new voices and fresh smiles to face the upcoming year. It’s good to have them around here and we can’t wait for you to meet them all at that screening we know you already booked last week.

Signing off on another dispatch from the headquarters of a revolution….
