Meet the Roadies, Chapter 2
December 1st, 2006
Here we are again, and this time we’ll introduce you to the roadies that will be exploring the two famous corners of America: New England and Southern California. Before the introductions begin, let it be known that our hearts skip a beat with these two teams, and soon you’ll love them too… Team: NEW ENGLAND First on the team is Southern California’s own Heather Larrabee. Heather was born and raised in Rancho Cucamonga. Coming from a family of 12, she was more than ready to get out of the house when college came around. Heather moved to San Diego five years ago to attend the University of California, San Diego. She finally declared her major at the end of her fourth year as Linguistics-Cognition/Language and Pre-Med. When she's not slaving away in the IC offices, she enjoys working for the Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience at San Diego State, conducting research studies on American Sign Language and the brain. She heard about IC from Laren when she met him at UCSD two years ago. Sick of just talking about making a difference in Northern Uganda, Heather decided to DO something and became a part of the movement and National Tour. She has never experienced a "real" winter, and can’t wait to freeze her butt off in New England. Next in the amazing line-up…standing 5 foot 2 as the shortest and youngest of the bunch…is Alana Duyao. Born and raised in sunny San Diego, she’s ready to embrace seasons and temperatures below sanity. A sponge in her own right, Alana thrives from learning about anything and everything. Her interests include surfing, climbing trees and boulders, reading, writing and painting. She is excited to get to know nor’easters like her new family, and hopes to have a New York or Boston accent by the end of the tour. Brent Lutz grew up in the heart of it all. Yep. You guessed it – Northeastern Ohio. Three and a half years ago, he ventured down to the Sunshine State to attend Southeastern University in Florida. As a Youth Ministry Major, Brent has realized his love for kids. He first heard about Invisible Children a year and a half ago through the internet. After watching the movie, he was moved to go to the Global Night Commute where he met last year’s Road Crew. They unknowingly changed his life. He signed up for the National Tour, and is stoked to be going to New England. Brent believes that our country has the power to bring change to all of the social injustices going on in the world today. If our generation believes in something much greater than ourselves and demands justice, we will see the ripple effect of change across our country and the world. Oh, and by night, Brent shreds on the guitar for a local band called The Lost Boys. And then there’s the kid who is always last in line, but from America’s first state – Chris Zwakenberg. He comes from the great state of Delaware. When he’s not surfing, skateboarding or snowboarding, he’s daydreaming about it. Chris graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Operations Management and double minors in Information Systems and Philosophy (although you would have never guessed it). His resume is convoluted, working in the fine business of lawn mowing to discovering the future of plastics as a plastic salesman. He just finished a summer of surfing ministry at a surf camp in San Diego called Walking on Water. He saw the Invisible Children film last spring and wanted to do something. When the opportunity came to tour the country showing the film to thousands of people, he couldn’t help but apply. He can’t wait to share the film and inspire people to make a difference. If you live in New England or New York City and want to change the world – from the kids in Uganda to the kids down the street – get in touch with Team New England! She’s from Indianapolis and drove 4 days (non-stop) to meet up with the Invisible Children squad. She is dedicated to IC and loves life. Carli always has a smile on her face and loves sitting in a group of close friends late at night. She also has this crazy weird obsession with Africa, and has pretty much left her heart there. Carli’s favorite day is Sunday: not only is it full of football (go Colts), but the cherry that tops her Sunday is the college group at The Flood in San Diego. If Carli had the chance, she’d jump on a bus with Emery (or the Colts) and travel the world as their number one roadie. Whether Carli is a natural-born roadie or just plain amazing, she’s our perfect gal for the So Cal Roadie Team. Daniel Steven Botticelli. Lovingly known as Dollar Dan by his co-workers, this hard-rocking skater brings a unique flavor to the Invisible Children team. Dan grew up skim-boarding the beaches of Southern California. Having just turned 22, this Patrick Henry High grad stands proud at 5’9. Filled with a thirst for life, Daniel’s facial expressions show what he is deeply passionate about: kids. Moonlighting as a children’s pastor with the Rock church, Daniel’s youthful heart is contagious to those around him. With Daniel, there is never a dull moment. You can count on him being completely honest with you (whether it’s a good or bad thing), and has no problem speaking his mind. Not only does Daniel love Uganda for its mystery and adventure, but he wears his heart on his sleeve for the kids of Uganda. Full of energy, loud and uninhibited, Daniel is an essential member to Southern California’s Team Awesome. So there you have it: the two new faces of IC, representing us to our friends and family here in Southern California. Hook them up like a fisherman holding the biggest fish on the boat, because this tour will be huge! Carli - cclements@invisiblechildren.com |
