GUESS? & YOUR BIG IDEA
October 16th, 2006
No matter who you are or where you’re from …. You can make a difference. We’ve been saying it since day one, from the first emails from the guys in Africa, to the new programs that we’re developing for kids across the world. YOU can make a difference. Check out Olivia and Caroline, two sisters that ran with a BIG idea for the invisible children. Last April 26, we were on the Oprah Winfrey show. Millions and millions of people around the world saw that show and were changed by the power of the story of the night commuters. People watched as Oprah introduced Jason, Bobby, and Laren, saying, “Well done. Many couldn’t believe that the story (that you all know so well by now) has changed thousands of lives both here and in Uganda, and that even Oprah is taking notice. And on the same day, while we were jumping up and down in our living rooms for the three filmmakers, 14-year-old Olivia sat and watched the tragic story of the invisible children. Wide-eyed and ready for action (as so many of you experienced after the first encounter with IC), Olivia told her sister, sixteen-year-old Caroline, that they HAD to do something for these kids. Caroline, seriously needing service hours for school, was stoked about Olivia’s big ideas. Ends up, Olivia and Caroline are the daughters of Maurice Marciano, Founder and Co-CEO of Guess?. That’s right, we said Guess? At dinner that night they couldn’t stop talking about the invisible children that were on Oprah. There had to be something they could do, that they could create; something that was different. They wanted people to feel the same empowering excitement that they had. They proposed shirts that could be sold at all the Guess? stores, and their dad agreed on the condition that EVERYTHING, from idea to the design to the store displays, was done by his daughters. He would open doors, but expect them to walk through and learn on their own. They worked after school and throughout the summer with designers, advertising, PR, you name it. They came up with two shirts: one guy’s t-shirt, one girl’s tank. And in every Guess? store in North America (and online), those limited edition shirts are for sale. Each shirt comes with a copy of “Invisible Children: Rough Cut – Olivia and Caroline wanted to make sure that people knew the story behind the design. Every purchase at Guess (whether it’s a belt, a pair of jeans, or some socks) will come with a card that explains Invisible Children and what YOU can do. Oh, and one more thing…EVERY PENNY GOES TO INVISIBLE CHILDREN. The shirts are in stores NOW. Buy one and support two girls with big ideas for Invisible Children. What’s yours? |
